- When a boy was born he was inspected. If he was small, sickly or handicapped he would be discarded.
- Since the age of 2 the boy was taught the skills to fight.
- At the age of 7 the boy was taken away from his mother as a form of male rights of passage.
- The boy was punished so as to teach him not to show pain, nor mercy.
- The boy was thrown into the wild alone to survive. This was a ritual of initiation.
- A spartan was never to retreat and never to surrender.
- Death on the battlefield was the greatest glory for a Spartan.
- All Spartans work together, live together and die together.
